“No one can write about my life because it has not been on the surface for man to see.”
Maharishi Arvind Ghosh, popularly known as Aurobindo Ghosh was a multifaceted man who is known for his excellence in poetry, freedom struggle, philosophy, yoga and spirituality. Born on 15th August 1852 in Kolkata Aurobindo was provided the best education from Loreto Convent School, Darjeeling and graduated from King’s College, Cambridge. While studying at Cambridge he also prepared for the Civil Services and qualified ICS with high rank. But he could not stand the mandatory horse riding test and thus could not join the service.
By this time Aurobindo was already learned in Greek, French, Italian, German, Latin and Spanish. He had also mastered the classics and English poetry. In 1893, he returned back to India and became highly interested in teaching at Baroda State College. It was during the partition of Bengal in 1906 when Aurobindo entered the revolutionary movement and became an active part of the freedom struggle. He led the group of Indian nationalists and published the nationalist Bengali newspaper- Vande Mataram, awakening the masses about the atrocities inflicted by British and need for freedom from foreign rulers.
During the freedom struggle, Aurobindo developed his interest in yoga and meditation. He also came across the spiritual guru Vishnu Bhasker Lele, who further guided him on the path of deep meditation and spirituality. His spiritual journey took a turn in British jail. Being secluded from the material world he got a chance to concentrate and learn more about higher realms of consciousness. In one of his speeches Shree Aurobindo himself said,
“I looked at the jail that secluded me from men and it was no longer by its high walls that I was imprisoned; no, it was Vasudeva who surrounded me. I walked under the branches of the tree in front of my cell but it was not the tree, I knew it was Vasudeva, it was Sri Krishna whom I saw standing there and holding over me his shade. I looked at the bars of my cell, the very grating that did duty for a door and again I saw Vasudeva. It was Narayana who was guarding and standing sentry over me. Or I lay on the coarse blankets that were given me for a couch and felt the arms of Sri Krishna around me, the arms of my Friend and Lover. This was the first use of the deeper vision He gave me. I looked at the prisoners in the jail, the thieves, the murderers, the swindlers, and as I looked at them I saw Vasudeva, it was Narayana whom I found in these darkened souls and misused bodies. Amongst these thieves and dacoits there were many who put me to shame by their sympathy, their kindness, the humanity triumphant over such adverse circumstances.”
It was in the prison only when he was visited by the powerful soul of Swami Vivekananda, who enlightened him about the divine state of super-consciousness. After his release from the jail, Maharishi Aurobindo went into deeper state of meditation for 4 years In Pondicherry. Then by association with the French lady, named Mira Richards, he was able to set up an ashram in Pondicherry near sea which was named as Auroville. Sri Aurobindo Asram began with a mere companionship of 4 people and 124 disciples but later became a hub of spiritual learning for thousands of people.
Sri Aurobindo taught the concept of ‘Being and Consciousness’ by realizing the real truth living in the cosmic Universe. His main motive was to enlighten people about their true self- soul and divinity inside them. He wanted people to move from world consciousness to divine consciousness and to learn the art of merging oneself with the Supreme Lord. His teachings on ‘integral yoga’ are clearly explained in ‘The Life Divine’ including the detailed explanation with live examples. Devoting his entire life for spiritual awakening, his soul merged with the formless on 5th December, 1950 but his vision and mission is still spreading message of peace, love and universal brotherhood.
Goddess Gayatri or the Mother of all the Vedas is adored and praised by chanting the powerful Gayatri mantra. The word ‘Gayatri’ itself explains the reason for the existence of this mantra. It has its origin in the Sanskrit phrase Gayantam Triyate iti, and refers to that mantra which rescues the chanter from all adverse situations that may lead to mortality.
The first line ‘Om bhur bhuvah svah’ is not actually part of a Gayatri mantra and it is a special utterance called ‘vyahriti’ that has been added to the beginning of the famous mantra.
The First word ‘OM’ is the prime subject around which the entire creation revolves and it is the permanent truth within which everything exists. It is an auspicious sound made at the beginning of many prayers.
The expression ‘bhur bhuvah’ and ‘svah’ is technical, but a simple way to think of it is as a “call to creation,” that the light of the sun (the light of God) shines on the earth (bhur), in the sky (bhuvah), and in space (svah), and therefore the implication is, “let that light also shine on me.”
The word-to-word breakdown of the Gayatri mantra that most Hindus know is:
tat– that (God)
savitur– of the sun
varenyam– the best
bhargo (bhargas)– light, illumination
dhimahi– let us meditate (a verb)
dhiyo (dhiyah)– thought(s)
nah –of us, our
prachodayat– May it push, inspire (a verb)
The most important word in the Gayatri mantra is the word, “tat” which is a neuter pronoun meaning “that.” It is a reference to “that One,” God.
The sun, which is the source of illumination, heat, food and so many other things in our life, can naturally be seen as the “representative” or symbol of God in this world.
There are two verbs in the Gayatri mantra, ‘dhimahi’ and ‘prachodayat’.
Dhimahi means, “let us meditate on the light (bhargo) of the sun which represents God.”
This is the basic meaning of the first part of the Gayatri Mantra.
Coming to the second part, the verb ‘prachodayat’ literally means, “it should push,” but in more poetic language we can translate it as “let it inspire.”
Dhiyah is “thoughts,” so dhiyo yo nah prachodayat means, “may our thoughts be inspired”
Thus the most literal meaning of the Gayatri mantra is:
“Let us meditate on the light of the sun which represents God, and may our thoughts be inspired by that divine light.”
The message of Universal peace and enlightenment reminds us of the reverend Buddha, and the journey from birth of prince Siddhartha to enlightenment and becoming Buddha and finally entering into the Nirvana phase. To celebrate the divine occasion of all these auspicious events, the Buddhist festival known as Buddha Purnima or Vesak/Wesak is widely rejoiced on the full moon day of the lunar month, Vaisakha. This year this festival is falling on 4th May, 2015.
Significance of this day:
The day in history which was pre decided by the Universe, is of utmost significance as it holds the three fold journey i.e. birth, enlightenment and death (entering into Nirvana) of Buddha. Not only this, it is also believed that his wife Yashodhara, his first disciple Ananda, his charioteer Channa, and the horse Kantaka on which he renounced his, were all born on this sacred day. Even, the Bodhi tree, under which he attained nirvana, was also believed to have been created on this day. The first sermon at Varanasi by Buddha was also held on this same day.
This festival is a reminder of his noteworthy journey, as he left an epitome for the entire humanity by living as a perfect saint. His eight fold path of right belief, right intention, right living, right conduct, right word, right thinking, right efforts and right meditation; comprehends the perfect balance between materialistic and spiritual life. So the Dharma chakra (8 spokes and path to enlightenment) at Buddhist monasteries symbolises the journey of an individual, and these sacred teachings of Buddha are an inspiration to lead our lives on his directed path.
Rituals on this day:
Special celebrations are organized at Bodh Gaya in Nepal, Kushinagar, Sarnath and other parts around India and the world. Prayers, sermons, recitation of Buddhist scriptures and meditation are performed by the Buddhists devotees, on this day to express their deep love and faith towards Lord Buddha. Numerous birds, insects and other animals are released on this day to celebrate the ‘Act of liberation’, by providing freedom to the tortured and innocent souls. The festival is celebrated with peace and devotion to express the honour towards the Five Principles of Lord Buddha, known as ‘Panchsheel’.

Adoring and praising the creation of supreme Lord begets gratitude in the mortal beings. But in a world, where biasedness prevails in terms of caste, religion, colour, dialect and so on; the human beings have disregarded almighty and his beautiful creation. The true essence of humanity and kindness is overshadowed in the presence of abhorrence, cruelty and self-centred traits. Remembering those lovely lines of a poet, “Ek Umar Bhi Kam Hai Pyaar Ke Liye; Log Kaha Se Samay Nikal Lete Hai Nafrat Ke Liye”; meaning- Life is too short for love; where do people get time for hatred.
Getting far away from the base of life, we are indulged in the glittering world of materialism; i.e. the major cause of troubles and grief in our lives. When the matured beings are parting from the devotional feelings of remembering God then imagine the deteriorating culture among the new generations.
Yet here we highlight the worth of remembering God by adhering the holy Vedas and how they prove to be beneficial for us.
Significance of Vedic Worship:
Our Vedas are the source of living on the spiritual path, towards the supreme destination of existence. Performing the worship according to the rites and rituals helps us to celebrate and honour life every moment and also seek His blessings for prosperity and physical or mental well-being. The Vedic worship includes a combination of Mantra (recitation of Vedic mantras), Yantra (meditation on mystical representation of subtle energies) and Tantra (rituals of worship).
- The worship includes all the five Panchamahabhutas or the five elements of fire, water, earth, air and ether that represents the presence of ‘macro world’ within our ‘micro world’.
- It brings happiness and longevity in life by seeking the grace of Supreme Lord.
- By performing the worship, positive ambience is created by rejuvenating the entire space.
- Pujas and Homas being self-healing meditation techniques benefit an individual with a more ideal state of mind and body.

“If you believe then even a mortal object is God but if you don’t then even if He is standing right there in front of you, you will stay ignorant and unaware.” Our ancestors referred varied objects as of prime holy importance and gave them the position next to God because of certain magical speciality. The never tried to get behind the rational of the phenomena rather it was easier for them to term it magical. Worshipping trees and plants is another such epitome of esteem faith, which is still prevalent in our society. Peepal tree or scientifically called Ficus religiosa is known for being sacred for years. Apart of the historical aspects related to this plant, just try and give a thought over the scientific aspect of it.
Scientific logic for worshipping Peepal tree:
Peepal tree is a large deciduous plant which is renowned for its long life span of approximately 100 years. It is widely prominent throughout India. The tree has a 24 hour oxygen supply system which differentiates it from the other plants. Usually the trees and plants release oxygen during the day and intake carbon dioxide; and the process is vice versa during the night. But Peepal tree emits oxygen during day and night due to a special photosynthesis process named Crassulacean Acid Metabolism (CAM). So peepal tree is like a life sustaining machine that gives the continuous supply of oxygen.
- Another interesting fact about this tree is its anti-bacterial function that acts as a shield against bacterial and fungal allergies. All the parts of the tree are significant in some way or the other.
- Barks are used for medicinal purposes and the tannin released from it is used in the leather industry.
- The leaves are used to heal wounds and its juice is used as a cure for ear and speech problems.
- The root bark is useful for stomatitis, clean ulcers, and promotes granulations; if chewed raw then the gum issues are also resolved.
- The fruit is recommended for heart diseases and Asthma.
Peepal tree is often symbolised as Lord Vishnu, according to the famous tale when Vishnu Ji hid behind it from the demons. The Skanda Purana considers Peepal tree as a representation of Lord Vishnu. The tree is considered as a universe in itself because the roots being compared to Brahma, the trunk Vishnu and the leaves Shiva.
“Among the trees, I am the ashvatha”, explains the divine importance of this tree under which Lord Krishna took his last breath. Thus childless couples often tie red threads on the tree for the desire of a baby, as Skanda purana mentions that Peepal tree is like a son for those who don’t have one.
Peepla tree is a sign of enlightenment and attaining wisdom in Buddhism. ‘He who worships the Peepal tree will receive the same reward as if he worshiped me in person’, said Lord Buddha as he achieved the prime knowledge meditating below the peepal tree. Thus it is a symbol of enlightenment and harmony spreading the wave of peace and happiness all around.
