This is the story of a money lender who has always devoted to performing yajnas etc. So liberally did he gave donations that even he was not left with anything to support himself. Then his wife said, In the neighboring villages lives a rich man who buys Merits. So go to him and bring some money by selling some of your merits so that we might pull on any how then the man agreed to go there. His wife baked four chapatti and gave them to him to be eaten on the way. He approached the city. There was a tank at the place. When he sat down to eat, a bitch came up there, she and her younger ones had nothing to eat for the last three days. Seeing the hungry bitch he offered one of the chapatti to her. She ate up to the chapatti, Then he gave the another one  which too was eaten by. Thus he gave all the four chapatti to her one by one. The bitch appeased her hunger. Thus having forgone his food he approached the rich man. Approaching him he told his intention of selling his merits. The rich man said that he should come in the afternoon.

Now the wife of the rich man was inordinately devoted to her husband. He asked his wife which merit is the best worth being purchased. The wife said only that merit is worth which he has earned this day by feeding this hungry bitch while he was sitting on the bank of the tank.

The man came to the rich man on the appointed time and said-Which of my merits would you like to purchase? He rich man said – I want to go in for the same yajna that you have earned today. I have not performed any yajna today because I didn’t have any money then how? At the rich man said- I want to purchase the same merit that you have earned by offering the four chapattis to the bitch. The man said – how could you know that/ the rich man said – My wife is devoted to me so she who told me. then the man said- very well, you may take the desired merit. But tell me what price you are going to pay for it. The rich man said I shall give u pearls and diamonds equal in weight of chapattis. The man consented to it and as agreed upon by him and making four chapattis roughly equal in weight to his chapattis. Put them on one of the scales and put peals and diamonds on the other but in the spite putting a number of them, the scales containing the chapattis did not rise from the ground. At this the rich man said I will give you more jewels. When the man noticed this miraculous effect of his merit. He said- he would not to sell.

Thereafter the man left and gathering some pebbles and pieces of glass at the bank of the same tank and tying them up in a piece of cloth returned home. On reaching home he handed over the small bundle to his wife. When she opened the bundle she found in it diamonds, emeralds and rubies etc. she was much pleased. She asked to her husband – From where did you get so many diamonds and emeralds. The man said – ‘why are you jesting’ wife said – I am not jesting. I have opened the bundle and seen with my own eyes.

Then the man said fetched here! Let me see it. He was astonished to look at them. He considered it to be the effect of that meritorious work. Then he explained everything to his wife.

There is intended to convey to the readers is that the donation given to a distressed person who is in dire necessity of it, multiplies innumerable times. By the grace of God even pebbles and pieces of stones turn into diamonds and emeralds.

Children Story: Guru Nanak Dev and bread of honesty

Guru Nanak Dev Ji travelled to various places to spread the word of love, humanity and Universal brotherhood. Once he visited Saidpur, now known as Eminabad, so the head of the place Malik Bhago decided to make all the comfortabguru nanak dev jile arrangements for Guru Nanak Ji. But to everybody’s surprise Guru Nanak Dev Ji decided to stay at the house of a poor carpenter named Lalo. In spite of the worst condition of Lalo, he arranged food to offer Guru Nanak ji. Nanak Dev ji accepted the food with love and was pleased by the hospitality of Lalo.

Malik Bhago was known for his corrupt means of earning money and taking the advantage of the plight of poor farmers. His ego could not accept that Guru Nanak ji preferred to live with poor Lalo and not him. Malik Bhago organized a special gathering and invited all the sacred men of the city along with Guru Nanak Dev ji.

When Nanak Dev ji refused to accept the invitation of Bhago, he ordered his guards to bring Nanak Dev ji to his place. When he reached Bhago’s place Malik Bhago said, “O holy man, I have prepared so many dishes for you, but you are staying with a poor carpenter and eating his dry bread? Why?

Guru ji replied, “I cannot eat your food because your bread is made from corrupt money sucked from the poor, while Lalo’s bread is made from hard earned money.” On hearing this Malik Bhago became red with anger and told him to prove his point.

Guru Nanak Dev ji asked Lalo and Bhago to get their respective piece of bread. Guru ji squeezed both the breads with his hands. Milk dripped out from Lalo’s bread and blood from Bhago’s bread. Everybody was shocked to see this sight and Malik Bhago was terribly shaken with guilt. He immediately fell in the feet of Nanak Dev ji and asked for forgiveness. On Nanak Dev ji suggestion he distributed all his corrupt wealth among the needy farmers and from then on he decided to live a life of honesty.

With Guru Nanak dev ji’s grace Malik Bhago realized his mistake and could follow the path of righteousness.

Story Behind offerings to Lord Hanuman

Posted on Updated on

hanuman ji story (1)

Lord Hanuman is highly adored with butter and betel leaves while performing the puja ceremony. Let’s explore the significance behind these offerings.

Betel leaves:

They are specially offered to Lord Hanuman as once Mata Sita expressed her gratitude and and blessings to Him by showering the betel leaves upon him. It is said that the betel leaves were the token of appreciation and blessings of Lord Rama and Mata Sita for Hanuman, after winning over Ravana.

Moreover betel leaves are known to be offered to the intellectual one who is well versed with the sacred knowledge of Vedas and shastras. Thus the huge bank of knowledge of Hanuman and his intellect to use that knowledge in every difficulty made him get respect and love from Rama and Sita ji.

Butter:

At the time of battle between Lord Rama and Ravana, both were trying their best to defeat each other. Unlike the huge chariot of Ravana, Lord Rama was being carried by Hanuman ji.  When all the tactics of Ravana failed he thought to attack Hanuman instead of Lord Rama.

As soon as the arrow hit Hanuman ji and wounded him, Lord Rama was unable to see his devotees’s plight and fought vigorously with Ravana. The situation became worse for Ravana and he had to give up. When Lord Rama and Hanuman returned to their camp, Lord Rama himself applied cool butter on Hanuman ji’s wound to cool down his burning wounds.

Following the age old traditions began by Lord Rama and Mata Sita, betel leaves garland and butter are still offered to Lord Hanuman by his devotees, to express their love and respect for Him.
