This is the story of a money lender who has always devoted to performing yajnas etc. So liberally did he gave donations that even he was not left with anything to support himself. Then his wife said, In the neighboring villages lives a rich man who buys Merits. So go to him and bring some money by selling some of your merits so that we might pull on any how then the man agreed to go there. His wife baked four chapatti and gave them to him to be eaten on the way. He approached the city. There was a tank at the place. When he sat down to eat, a bitch came up there, she and her younger ones had nothing to eat for the last three days. Seeing the hungry bitch he offered one of the chapatti to her. She ate up to the chapatti, Then he gave the another one which too was eaten by. Thus he gave all the four chapatti to her one by one. The bitch appeased her hunger. Thus having forgone his food he approached the rich man. Approaching him he told his intention of selling his merits. The rich man said that he should come in the afternoon.
Now the wife of the rich man was inordinately devoted to her husband. He asked his wife which merit is the best worth being purchased. The wife said only that merit is worth which he has earned this day by feeding this hungry bitch while he was sitting on the bank of the tank.
The man came to the rich man on the appointed time and said-Which of my merits would you like to purchase? He rich man said – I want to go in for the same yajna that you have earned today. I have not performed any yajna today because I didn’t have any money then how? At the rich man said- I want to purchase the same merit that you have earned by offering the four chapattis to the bitch. The man said – how could you know that/ the rich man said – My wife is devoted to me so she who told me. then the man said- very well, you may take the desired merit. But tell me what price you are going to pay for it. The rich man said I shall give u pearls and diamonds equal in weight of chapattis. The man consented to it and as agreed upon by him and making four chapattis roughly equal in weight to his chapattis. Put them on one of the scales and put peals and diamonds on the other but in the spite putting a number of them, the scales containing the chapattis did not rise from the ground. At this the rich man said I will give you more jewels. When the man noticed this miraculous effect of his merit. He said- he would not to sell.
Thereafter the man left and gathering some pebbles and pieces of glass at the bank of the same tank and tying them up in a piece of cloth returned home. On reaching home he handed over the small bundle to his wife. When she opened the bundle she found in it diamonds, emeralds and rubies etc. she was much pleased. She asked to her husband – From where did you get so many diamonds and emeralds. The man said – ‘why are you jesting’ wife said – I am not jesting. I have opened the bundle and seen with my own eyes.
Then the man said fetched here! Let me see it. He was astonished to look at them. He considered it to be the effect of that meritorious work. Then he explained everything to his wife.
There is intended to convey to the readers is that the donation given to a distressed person who is in dire necessity of it, multiplies innumerable times. By the grace of God even pebbles and pieces of stones turn into diamonds and emeralds.
The fearless daughter of Hada Rajput, named Rani Hada was married to Rao Ratan Singh of Salumber, Mewar. Rao was mesmerized by the beauty of her wife and in his infatuation ignored his call of duty. In around 1653-1680 a battle was fought between Maharaja of Mewar and Aurangzeb. Being a part of the Rajput fraternity and helping to save their province, Maharana Raj Singh called Rao Ratan along with his army. When called by Maharana Raj Singh to join the battle against Aurangzeb, he sent his army but refused to come along because of his newly married wife. Rani Hada was disturbed due to his husband’s cowardly attitude and held herself and her beauty responsible for it.
Rani Hada had grown up hearing the tales of bravery of Rajput kings and queens and thus she finally convinced his husband to follow his ‘Kshatriya dharma’. Rao was finally prepared to leave for the battle and requested his wife to offer him a memento that reminds him of her.
Rani Hada requested her daasi to bring a box and sword and instructed her to handover the box to Rao ji. Daasi shouted in shock as Rani Hada chopped off her head with the sword. Abiding by the orders, she kept Rani Hada’s head in the box and ran to Rao ji.
Looking at her wife’s head Rao ji was broken and also proud of his brave Rani. She sacrificed her own self to make her husband follow his Rajputana dharma. Determined to pay homage to her wife’s sacrifice he bravely fought with the army of Aurangzeb and won over them. After winning over Aurangzeb he got on his keens and cut his neck because he had lost the desire to live anymore.
Even today the palace of Salumber has the statue of Rao Ratan Singh with Rani Hada’s head and she is remembered as an epitome of valour. Rani Hada was indeed a true Rajputani and kept her morals higher than anything else. Her sacrifice is immortal and will be remembered till time immemorial.
The epitome of dharma and righteousness, Yudhishtira had to face a tough challenge of Yaksha to save his 4 brothers from the mouth of death. When thirsty Nakul went in search of water and found the crystal clear water for quenching his thirst, he was warned by a voice to answer his questions before drinking the water. Ignoring the voice Nakul went forward to drink the water and he immediately fell down on the ground. Similar situation happened with Sahdeva, Arjuna and Bhima and now all four brothers were lying dead.
Finally Yudhishtira went to inquire about his brothers and got anxious to see their state. Since there were no wounds or any marks of injury on their bodies, Yudhishtira was sure that it is some kind of supernatural power. Soon he heard the voice of Yaksha, “I am Yaksha and I warned all your brothers to answer my questions before drinking the water. But they overlooked my warning and now lying dead.” Yaksha further told Yudhishtira that in order to save the lives of his brothers he need to answer his questions. Yudhishtira realized that it is the Lord Himself who is testing the righteousness of Him and his brothers. He payed his respect to Yaksha and with great humility, he requested the Omnipresent to ask questions and he will try to answer them with the best of his ability. I any case he will abide by his Dharma and Yaksha terms. To test the wisdom of Yudhistira, Yaksha asked may questions and answers to which reveal the great values of life. Most important of them are listed below:
Yaksha: What is weightier than the Earth?
Yaksha: Which is taller than the sky?
Yaksha: What is faster than the wind?
Yaksha: By renouncing what does one become affectionate?
Yaksha: Which is the best wealth?
Yaksha: What is the principal duty of man?
Yaksha: Who doesn’t have a heart?
Yaksha: Where does Dharma reside?
Yudhishtira: Dharma resides in good deeds of human beings.
There were other questions in similar lines covering various other deep and subtle aspects of life. After replying to all the questions of Yaksha, Yudhistira saved the life of Nakul first and Arjuna and Bhima later. Yaksha was surprised and became curious to know the reason behind saving the step brothers before real ones. Yudhistira replied, “I do not differentiate between any of my brothers. Dharma is the priority for me and I will always protect Dharma”. Yaksha was pleased to hear his reply and said, “Because you uphold Dharma victory will always be yours”.
Once upon a time an orphan boy lived with his grandmother in the village. The boy wanted to study so he requested his grandmother to send him to school. The only hurdle for going to school was the 5 km thick forest that he had to cross every day. The little boy was afraid to go to school as crossing the dense forest, full of wild animals, was a tough task for him.
His grandmother suggested him an easy solution. She told him that for good boys like him Gopal is a great friend and as soon as he reached the forest area he should call out for Gopal. Gopal will be with him throughout the forest journey and make him cross the forest. The boy obeyed his grandmother’s order and followed it wisely.
Every day he cried out ‘Gopal Aao’ (Come Gopal) when he reached the forest area, both back and forth. The moment he called for Gopal, an 11 year old boy appeared wearing a peacock hat, to hold his hand and made him travel across the forest safely. This continued for many days and the little boy felt secured and guarded.
When his grandmother asked him about his journey across the forest, he smiled and said, “I follow your advice daily and Gopal drops me safely”. According to him Gopal accompanied him to school and then back to his home. His grandmother thought he just imagines someone walking along with him and there is no one in reality but she was happy for his courage.
After few days a wicked shopkeeper in the village asked the little boy, “Aren’t you afraid to travel across the jungle alone?” The boy again answered in his innocence that he does not travel alone. As soon as he enters forest Gopal joins him till end of the forest, both ways. The shopkeeper didn’t believe him and thought it to be an imaginary tale. To verify the truth of his story, the shopkeeper asked the boy that can he show him Gopal. The boy replied, “You can hide behind the trees and see Gopal accompany me”.
One morning the shopkeeper went along with the boy to verify his tale. As soon as the boy said, “Gopal Aao”, Gopal came and holded his hand. But when Gopal turned around to see the shopkeeper, he fell unconscious. Gopal told the little boy to keep his presence as a secret and he will always be by his side.
This tale clearly portrays that God is always with his children and he is standing by our side in every thick and thin. Just like an innocent child we have to seek for his help and He will be there to support us.
Sequel 2 : After Krishna’s Birth
After Vasudeva adjusted things as they had been before he carried Krishna to Gokula, and all the doors and gates became similarly closed, the gatekeepers awoke and heard the newborn child crying. Kansa was waiting to hear the news of the child’s birth, and the gatekeepers immediately approached him and informed him that the child was born. At that time, Kansa got up from his bed very quickly and exclaimed, “Now the cruel death of my life is born!” Kansa became perplexed now that his death was approaching, and his hair scattered. Immediately he proceeded toward the place where the child was born.
Devakī, on seeing her brother approaching, prayed in a very meek attitude to Kansa: “My dear brother, please do not kill this female child. I promise that this child will be the wife of your son; therefore don’t kill her. You are not to be killed by any female child. That was the prophecy. You are to be killed by a male child, so please do not kill her. My dear brother, you have killed so many of my children who were just born, shining like the sun. That is not your fault. You have been advised by demoniac friends to kill my children. But now I beg you to excuse this girl at least. Let her live as my daughter.”
The day to adore the Goddess of knowledge, art and science –Goddess Saraswati is widely known as Vasant Panchami. The festival is celebrated on the 5th day or ‘Panchami’ of the bright fortnight of the lunar month of ‘Magha’, which falls during January-February. It is also referred as the ‘birthday of Goddess Saraswati’- thus auspicious for beginning any kind of good and important work on this day.
Many educational institutions also pay a tribute to Goddess Sarawati on this day by organizing special prayers and program. To express the gratitude and to seek blessings from the Goddess, children are inspired by making them aware about Her grace. Not only in educational institutions but many temples also celebrate this day with great enthusiasm. The idols of Goddess are dressed in white and special Saraswati puja is organized.
Pitr-tarpan (puja for departed soul) is performed and Brahmins are fed. Kamdeva and Vasant, known as the personification of spring, are also honoured on this day. The colour yellow is given special importance as it is considered the symbol of blossoming flowers of mustard. Therefore yellow attire is worn, yellow flowers are offered to Goddess Saraswati and even sweets and dishes are also prepared in yellow and saffron colour.
