If you have always been weak with numbers and wondered why it is so, wait a minute! There might be something more to blame than just your lack of practice. You can easily pass on the blame on your horoscope! You think I am joking?
According to Indian Astrology, Mercury, also known as Budha, is the planet of intelligence and the IQ of a person depends on the strength of Mercury in the horoscope. Budha, a son of Chandra and Tara, is the god of merchandise and protector of Merchants. He is represented holding a scimitar, a club and a shield, riding atop a winged lion. He has a greenish complexion and thought of to be mild and eloquent by nature.
The planet of Mercury epitomizes logic, calculation and mathematics as far as astrological terminology is concerned. He is in charge of all artistic pursuits. That is the reason why Mercury rules education, writers, lecturers, traders, teachers, artists and businessmen. Your style of communication as well as your speaking patterns depends on the position of Mercury in your Horoscope. But the planet is as good as its associates. If associated with benefic planets, mercury gives honest ideas of increasing wealth. On the other hand if associated with malefic planets, it leads to wealth generation through wrong means such as stealing or cheating. A badly placed Mercury can cause several health problems like psychic diseases, insomnia, nervous breakdown and many communication related problems among others.
Mercury has two faces, giving it a double nature and makes one detached and independent as well as an extremist at the same time. It loves the company of learned and is said to be the lord of the north direction.
So the next time you are being rounded up for poor maths grades, you can safely put it on your horoscope!

Rahu and Ketu are referred to as the demons who consumed nectar and became immortal.
In almost all books of astrology of India they are referred to but have rarely been praised. It may be because of their mystic nature and a lot of mysterious stories associated with both these planets.
According to the vedic sages the point where the moon’s north node cuts the earth’s axis in the zodiac and thus makes a shadow on the zodiac is called Rahu and the South node of the moon is called Ketu. Ironically Rahu, the North Node which is looking towards earth signifies Materialism and Ketu which is in to the Darkness, as it is reversely pointed looks like tail Or symbolically an inward look in to the sub consciousness Or signifies Spirituality as Opposed to Rahu and both nodes are always 180¾ apart in the 360¾ 12-House divided Zodiac.
By the advancement in research, a lot of predictions have come out with lots of interesting aspects and significance of Rahu and Ketu in one’s horoscope. Rahu as such depending on its placement and strength etc. factors can some times give a tremendous and sudden mystical developments and great Raja Yoga karaka facilitator.
Based on the sacred Hindu mythological literature of India it was unraveled that long ago there were constant wars between Devatas and Asuras. The asuras always won with the guidance of their guru Shuckracharya’s majestic Mritha Sanjivi power, which the guru had obtained as a fruit of his penance, propitiating Lord Shiva. The power of this Mritha Sanjivini is, it can resurrect the dead, back to life. In this way, each Asura who was killed in the war by the Devas, was brought back to life by this manthra. Thus, this ensured constant defeat for the Devas and the Asuras continued to rule the heavens.
Once there was a great war between the Asuras (demons) and Devatas (gods). The Devatas were routed in the war and they went to Lord Brahma to seek his help. Brahma told them to churn the ocean. As a result they would be able to obtain Amrit (nectar) which would make them immortal and all powerful and after consuming it they would be able to defeat the Asuras. Churning the ocean was a very big job and so the Devatas sought the help of the Asuras. Lord Indra, went to heavens, and, sought for peace, and, said that henceforth, the Devas and Asuras should never wage war against each other, and, told them the need for churning the milk ocean and the power of consuming the Amrith. The Asuras, agreed, and inside their evil minds, they thought, once the churning is over and the Amrith is obtained, we will steal the Amrith.
The king of the serpents Vasuki was to become the rope, while a hill named Mandrachal offered to become the pivot. Lord Vishnu, in the form of a tortoise, became the base and the churning process began.
The Devatas held the tail of Vasuki and the Asuras held the head. Various things came out, during this churning of the milk ocean(Kshir sagar). There was a pot of Vish (poison) which created havoc in all the three worlds. Lord Shiva drank the poison to save the world, but he did not let the poison go beyond his neck which became blue in color. That is why Lord Shiva is also called ‘NeelKant’ (“one with a blue neck”).
At last Dhanvantari came out with a pot of Amrit and immediately there was a mad scramble for it among the Devatas and Asuras. Seeing this, Lord Vishnu took the form of Mohini (a beautiful dancer) and offered her services in distributing the Amrit equally to both the Asuras and Devatas. She made both of them sit in two different rows but she gave the Amrit to the Devatas only.
Towards the end, one of the Asuras saw through her trick. He went and sat among the Devatas and drank the Amrit. The moment Chandra (Moon) and Surya (Sun), who were sitting besides him saw that he was a Asura, they informed Mohini. Lord Vishnu came in his real form and let out the Sudarshan Chakra (wheel) at the Asura. The Asura’s neck was separated from the body, but he did not die as he had drunk the Amrit, Lord Brahma made SvarBhanu’sson of Viparchit) head
and body join with a snake, thus, the head joined a snake’s body, came to be known as RAHU and the snake’s head joined with SvarBhanu’s body, came to be known as KETU. Lord Brahma, granted RAHU and KETU a boon for accepting this new form, a place amidst the planets, the Navagrahas. RAHU and KETU, even to this day, hold the grudge against surya and chandra, and cause solar and lunar eclipse to affect them.
RAHU and KETU’s power increases between sunset to sunrise, their power of vengeance is so strong that they cause an astrological moment called the RAHU KAALAM, that stays every day during the day for 1 hr and 30 minutes. This time is considered to be highly inauspicious for undertaking any good deeds and is only good for propitiating the divine mother.
Also there is another esoteric serpent symbolism associated with Rahu and Ketu to Kundalini Shakthi (Energy). The Head being Rahu (Signifying the different cosmic head petals of the Cosmic Snake Sahsrara Chakra or Awakening) and the tail being Ketu (Muladhara Chakra – Ganesha – or the beginning).
And yet another version is that, the Skanda Purana story of Rahu is a repetition of the same with one difference. Gods and Demons had decided to churn the ocean to extract nectar. The emphasis is that demons were as much a part of the effort to churn the ocean as gods. When nectar was got, Lord Vishnu decided to give nectar only to gods, not to demons. Rahu came to know of this decision. He assumed the shape of a god and entered the group of gods to drink nectar. Lord Vishnu cut off the head of Rahu.

Every time you switch on the news channel, you can see clippings of a theft or a murder that took place somewhere in the world. You might even end up seeing some riots or the news about a girl who fell victim to the atrocities of some sick minded people of our society. What’s your first reaction like? “What can we do? It’s kalyug!”, you’d probably say. Really? You might even add how good it would be to have lived during the satyayug when people lived together in peace and harmony and cared for each other. Let me ask you one thing. Is it fair to blame the time or the age we are living in for the innumerous crimes that take place every day in our society? For us to understand this, we first need to realize what we mean by a yug or an era.
According to the ancient texts and scriptures, Yuga in Hindu philosophy is the name of an epoch or era within a four age cycle. The cycles are said to repeat like the seasons. Each yug involves stages or gradual changes which the earth and the consciousness of mankind goes through as a whole. The cycle starts from the satyayug and goes on till kalyug until starting all over again.
It’s believed that the satyayug also known as the “Era of truth” was a time when mankind was governed by gods. During this age, there was no divide between the rich and the poor as there was no need to work. This is because all that people required was obtained by the power of will. The chief virtue of this era was the abandonment of all worldly desires. As a result there was no hatred or sorrow. The people would follow all the rules and regulations sincerely and conduct their dealings in a just and honest manner. Hence this was known as the “Golden Age”.
As of now, we are believed to be living in kalyug or the age of the vice. This is the last of the four ages described in the Hindu scriptures. Lord Krishna foretold that Kali Yuga will be full of extreme hardships for people with ideals and values. Isn’t it true to our world? We realize that the more a person tries to stay close to his ideals the more miserable the life he has to live whereas people who lie and cheat lead a comfortable life, enjoying all the materialistic pleasures the world has to offer.
Hindus believe that human civilization degenerates spiritually during the Kali Yuga, which is referred to as the Dark Age because in it people are as far away as possible from God. It seems true looking at number of crimes in the society and the sorry state of the society in general. The Mahabharata prophesized some events in the kalyug which bear striking resemblances in today’s world. It said that in the kalyug, rulers will become unreasonable and will no longer protect their subjects becoming a danger to the world. They will no longer see it as their duty to promote spirituality. Moreover, lies, greed and wrath will become common. Humans will openly display animosity towards each other. Sins will increase exponentially, whilst virtue will fade and cease to flourish. People will take vows and break them soon after. Gurus will no longer be respected and their teachings will be insulted.
Sounds familiar? This is exactly what’s happening in our world. I don’t know if you believe in the concept of yugs or not. I don’t know if you believe in spiruality or not. But I do know one thing. You cannot and should not blame the time for the poor state of our society. If you want to see a change in our society make it happen. If you say that it’s not possible for a single person to make a change, its true. But as is evident, every achievement that seems big today began with the dream of a single man. Do your bit and see how it sets off a domino effect. Let’s do our bit to make this world a better place to live in. Your tiny contribution counts too!

Most people know there are 12 Signs of the Zodiac but not many are aware of the fact that there are also 12 other divisions of the horoscope- the 12 houses.
Most horoscope traditions of astrology systems divide the horoscope into a number (usually twelve) of houses whose positions depend on time and location rather than on date. If you have ever looked at your birth chart, then you already know that you have planets in some of the houses and you may also have some empty houses. The houses represent the fields of experience wherein the energies of the signs and planets operate. Rather than symbolizing just the outward experiences and environmental circumstances specified by most traditional astrology, the houses are also revealing of the inner state and of one’s personal subjective experience and attitudes. They indicate how a person functions, whether in his interactions with other people, his work or his love relationships etc.
The twelve houses in the horoscope signify different aspects of a person’s life.
The angular houses (1, 4, 7, 10) are associated with a self-activating quality and have an immediate impact on the structure of one’s life. The keyword for the angular houses is ACTION.
House 1 – House of the Self
This is the house of YOU and your character traits. It is also referred to as the Ascendant or “Lagna” in Sanskrit. It is who you are on a primordial level. It is who you are generally. When well aspected it can give fame, beauty, popularity, good health and the ability to make a good first impression. When afflicted, it can do the opposite.
The planet ruling the 1st house becomes a symbol for you in the chart. It is referred to as the “Ascendant Lord”. Its sign, house placement, and planets aspecting it, have a lot to do with your characteristics and the major karmas affecting you throughout life.
House 4 – House of the Home/Mother
The fourth house rules your home, family circle, and all matters concerning the domestic front. The 4th is an angular house so planets here will manifest physically and give power to the chart. It symbolizes among other things, the endings of life, or old age. It also symbolizes the inner life of a person.
The fourth house is the point in the sky directly below the earth or “out of sight” at the time of the native’s birth. Therefore, it symbolizes things that are literally below the native, i.e., real estate, one’s home, fixed assets. Also, any type of conveyances, such as cars, planes, boats, or bicycles. It is an angular house so signifies foundations of one’s life.
Representing the mother, the first person to contact the native and build a relationship with him, the 4th house symbolizes general happiness and well-being, upon which the native builds his general attitude to life.
It also rules academic degrees and afflictions can prevent such. Body parts ruled are chest and breasts.
House 7 – House of the Spouse
House 7 – The House of the Spouse
The 7th house is the house of desire. It is also an angular house corresponding to physical manifestation.
The 7th house, being an angular house, will give power to any planets posited within. Since planets positioned here will aspect the Ascendant, the person will draw from characteristics of that planet.
Ruling the wife/husband, look to the 7th house for clues as to the spouse’s character and appearance. As well as if the quality of the marriage and also divorce. While delineating these things, one must be careful to note the 5th house (love from spouse), the 2nd house (family life) for overall married life interpretation. Sexual passion is seen from this house.
The lord of the 7th house represents the wife, along with Venus, in a man’s chart. It will show the type of wife he will get and her general character. For a woman, along with the 7th house, Jupiter represents the husband.
7th house also denotes residence in foreign countries.
House 10 – House of the Career
The 10th house is the strongest angular house. Planets placed here gain tremendous strength and are highly significant for a person’s character and life, overpowering even the Ascendant. The 10th, being an angular house, any planets placed here will manifest in physical reality.
Look to this house for career success and fame. The 10th house is the mid heaven, or the point in the sky directly above the earth at one’s birth. Because of this, actions and phenomena associated with this house are highly visible.
The succedent houses (2, 5, 8, 11) are associated with individual desires and the areas of life we want to control and consolidate. The keyword for this type of house is SECURITY.
House 2 – House of Wealth
The 2nd House denotes the quality of family life, your income, personal financial affairs, expenses, the way you earn and spend your money. In delineating married life, it is important to note the condition of the 2nd House along with the 7th and the 5th. Body parts represented by this House are the face and teeth. Afflictions to the 2nd can cause dental problems or give facial scars. Since the 2nd rules speech, malefic in the 2nd will cause a person to be overly argumentative and want to constantly bicker. The 2nd rules writing ability and teaching. An overwhelmingly well-disposed 2nd House will create a famous writer. The quality of what a person eats and drinks can be seen here. Also, foul language and the tendency to lie is seen from this house.
House 5 – The House of Children
The 5th House rules things we think of as goodies, such as pleasure, entertainment, parties, amusement, holidays, artistic, creative, musical and cultural pursuits. This house also relates to love affairs, romance courtship, emotional experiences and your children.A person’s past life karma is seen from this House. If one does not believe in “past lives”, then you can say that a person’s inevitable life choices can be seen here. This manifests as unavoidable actions in the area of life where the 5th Lord is located. For example, if the 5th Lord is in the 3rd House, then the person has unavoidable karma linked to the arts and/or short distance travel (inner-city travel), sales, younger siblings, and/or manual dexterity. The 5th House Lord posited in the 4th House will bring inevitable Karma with one’s Mother, real estate, conveyances, and the inner life of the person.
The 5th House rules sports, speculation and gambling as well. It also rules intelligence. A well posited Mars in the 5th can create an athlete. Jupiter well fortified in the 5th can make someone brilliant or interested in religious techniques such as chanting mantras or pranayama.
House 8 – The House of Death
This is the traditional explanation of this House but can be misleading because the 8th is also a House of Life. The 8th House is considered when delineating a person’s longevity. The manner of death can be seen from this House. The 8th House rules the occult sciences, such as Astrology, Mediumship and Psychic practices. Occultism is literally “hidden knowledge”. Sometimes an active 8th House will put a person in touch with alternative realities, I have often seen them have contact with ghosts. This usually manifests when there is a malefic influence on the 8th.Chronic illnesses and accidents are seen from this house. An 8th House blessed by benefic planetary occupation or aspects will give the Native protection from serious injury. Venus in the 8th, in a man’s chart is problematic and usually indicates divorce. Because the 8th House is also a house of destruction, planets posited there can be seriously harmed as well as their significations.
House 11 – The House of Large Sums, Gains and Friends
The 11th House signifies gains from side ventures and large sums of money. When one enters a period of the 11th House Lord, or Jupiter or Saturn transit through the 11th House, that time is distinguished by financial gains or losses from other sources besides one’s daily job. It also signifies an increase or decrease in the social life.
The 11th House also rules the eldest sibling. Afflictions to such will give either a strained relationship with them or a hard life for the sibling.
The cadent houses (3, 6, 9, 12) are areas where there is input, exchange, and distribution of thoughts and observations. The keyword for these houses is LEARNING.
House 3 – The House of the Siblings
The 3rd House rules all forms of communication – mental and physical- such as mail, correspondence, newspapers etc. It also relates to the kind of mind you have, your mental interests, the performing arts, debates, thinking habits in general. The quality of the relationship or the quality of life for the siblings can be seen here. Short distance travel and inner-city travel are ruled by the 3rd House. The 3rd House rules salesmen, public relations, retail. It also rules arms, shoulders and hands. As a natural consequence, manual dexterity such as carpentry and mechanics is seen from this house. Curiosity and courage are attributes of a well-disposed 3rd House. A person who has affliction to the Third is fearful and often has more than one phobia.
House 6 – The House of Enemies
“Enemies” is a rather strong word to describe the 6th. Think of enemies as anyone who can benefit from a situation more than you can. Co-workers and people with whom you are taking a test can be thought of as “enemies” in this sense. People with a well-fortified 6th House usually make great test-takers. Benefics in the 6th House make a person very well liked so that they have no enemies. Malefic planets (Mars, the Sun, Saturn, Rahu & Ketu) are welcome in the 6th and give the person the power to defeat his or her enemies.
General health is ruled by the 6th, so benefics here will give excellent health but poor digestion. The 6th rules digestion and a malefic in the sixth (a house where malefics are welcomed) will give power to the digestive system.
House 9 – The House of Fortune
The 9th House is the most auspicious House of the 12 Houses. It provides good luck in life, higher knowledge, spirituality, and a spiritual teacher. Differing from the 5th House which is the House of Mantras and Spiritual Techniques, the 9th House provides the person with a spiritual teacher and the interest in and blessing of spirituality. The 9th House rules knowledge of the future which is considered higher knowledge.A healthy dose of Luck is seen from this House. If the 9th is afflicted, problems are not easily solved. Ruling foreigners and long-distance and foreign travel, if the 9th is afflicted, the Native has problems in these areas, such as losing luggage at the airport, problems with his/her passport, negative experiences in foreign countries, etc., etc. If the 9th is well disposed, the opposite is the case.
House 12 – The House of Enlightenment
The 12th house is the most secret, veiled, mysterious area of your horoscope. It rules private and confidential matters, hidden places or things, activities that are carried on behind the scenes or in seclusion. A horoscope in which the 12th House figures prominently, gives the native a disinterest in worldly pursuits and an interest in Enlightenment. Monks, nuns, yogis, sadhus and ascetics are ruled by the 12th House.
Captivity and seclusion are 12th House matters. Hospitals, jails and monasteries are 12th House places. When the native has severe 12th House detriment, the person is often in and out of jail.
Our ancient puranas suggest 5 key solutions to solving problems – Tantra, Mantra, Mani Aushadhisnan and Ratna (Gems).
They describe the origins of gems and their strong relationship with the nine planets. Formed over eons, often at high pressure, the earth’s gemstones embody intense concentration of energy. Every gemstone has the power to draw energy or beams from respective planet and channelize into the wearer’s body.
Each stone has its own distinct feature and helps you control a different power. Where right hand is for the solar remedies, the left hand is for lunar energies. Proper channelization of these energies through the right gemstone helps one to attain a better control over his/her life. Suppose a particular planet is not strong in the horoscope, a person is suggested to wear the stone that represents that planet. E.g. Wear Yellow Sapphire to strengthen Jupiter.
You can either get this energy channelised by the means of your birth stone or Yog Karaka stone (suitable during the current planetary positions – Dasha, Mahadasha) that amplifies the benefits for you.
One should NOT wear any gems without consulting a gemstone consultant as it is not a fashion accessory.
Benefits of Gemstones:
* Remove obstacles in career and personal life caused by
faulty planetary placements in your horoscope
* Bring good fortune, reputation and unprecedented growth
* Control and cure diseases
* Enhance love, hope and optimism
* Strengthening married life
* Channelize your aura and attain happiness, peace, prosperity and success.

Rahu is the demon God and a mastermind.
When one runs through the mahadasha of Rahu which is 18 year old time period, one can surely be lost in life and may not know which direction their life is headed. There is a fog in front of them where right things looks wrong and wrong things look right. This is why it’s very easy to get into drugs, alcohol, gambling and unnecessary worldly desires while losing one sense of dharam.
This dasha is good and bad according to the positions of planets. It’s always better to have Rahu alone in your horoscope during his activation of mahadasha. Anytime Rahu associates himself with other planets he takes away the energy of that planet and sucks it dry.

Born in a Hindu family I was always taken to Lord Hanuman’s temple for worshiping him on Tuesdays. When asked why specifically on Tuesdays, I was given no answer. I know many of you fall in the same category as well.
Do you know? Lord Hanuman, also known as Bajrang Bali, is the epitome of selfless service and devotion. He was born on the full moon day (Purnima) of the month Chaitra on Tuesday. That is why, every year when Chaitra month’s full moon day arrives, his birth-day is celebrated, which is called Shri Hanuman Jayanti and Tuesday is considered very auspicious day to worship Lord Hanuman.
He is worshiped for his strength and fearlessness throughout the country. But what’s in a Tuesday? Many of you might wonder. Well, according to some experts on Hindu mythology, Tuesday is an auspicious day to get rid of “Kuja Dosh”. “Kuja” means ‘burning coal’ or ‘a fair person’. It is identified with Lord Kartikeya – the God of War. He is the son of Lord Shiva and was born with six heads. He killed the invincible demon Taraka and released the Devas from his oppression. The word is more prominently heard when the horoscopes of the bride and bridegroom are studied before their marriage. People tend to be very much worried about the presence of the Kuja dosha in their natal charts as it is believed that it can cause disturbance in their marital life. As a remedy, people who are afflicted with severe Kuja should worship Lord Hanuman daily, by reciting the Hanuman Chalisa. Moreover, they should visit the temple of Lord Hanuman on Tuesdays. This would help in diluting the extent of the effects of the Kuja Dosha. So the next time you worship Lord Hanuman on Tuesdays don’t be surprised!
