ASTROLOGY- A FIELD OF SCIENCE !

Posted on Updated on

What is the meaning of the word “Science” ? It is refereed to as a systematically organized body of knowledge on a particular subject. From this definition of science then we can infer Astrology as a form of Science as it uses scientific knowledge about heavenly bodies, as well as scientific sounding tools, like star charts. People generally prefer astrology to generate expectations about future events and people’s personalities which is quite similar to how scientific ideas generate expectations. The experiences of people who feel that astrology has worked for them also act as evidence for the success of astrology as a discipline.

There are few reasons which help us in viewing Astrology as a science:-

  • It aims to explain the natural world

Astrology uses a set of rules about the relative positions and movements of heavenly bodies to generate predictions and explanations for events on Earth and human personality traits. For example it is predicted that people born in The Ascendent (Lagna) is Taurus (Vrish) and he/she will be obsessed with emotional and financial security.

  • It uses testable ideas

Astrology has been used to generate very specific expectations that could be verified against outcomes in the natural world. For example it is widely believed  in astrology that  one’s zodiac sign impacts one’s ability to command respect and authority. These explanation also help people in make life choices more specifically career choice. Given these kinds of predictions, they are easily testable in the vector of time.

  • Provides evidences

One of the hallmarks of science is that ideas are modified when warranted by the evidence. A lot of personal experiences of a lot of people show how Astrology has changed their lives for better and they stand as evidences in support of Astrology.

Even though there are a lot of critics who dismiss the idea of Astrology as a Science but they do not have valid argumentations for that. It is correct to say that Astrology has existed for over five thousand years. Thousands of book titles, dissertations and journal articles in major academic libraries, conferences, schools, post-graduate studies, practitioners and businesses are dedicated to astrology. Astrology is considered of value to millions of individuals around the world. What then one needs to think is that there needs to be a compelling case of astrology as it deserves investigation before being written off like any other discipline.

It is nt correct to right away label astrology as one of these unfalsifiable myths (which it is not) and it is not a characteristic of good humanity to ridicule myths or rule out cherished beliefs or deny experiences of others.  A good example is of Black Swan which  was once considered a mythical creature and used as a metaphor for something that was ridiculous and impossible. In 1797, black swans were first discovered by Europeans in Western Australia.

Some fields that were once dismissed as being unworthy of study by the scientific community are now established within hard science. The belief that rocks could hit the Earth from space was widely ridiculed by eminent scientists of the Enlightenment. Now the study of meteorites is an important scientific field revealing insight into the nature and history of the Earth and Solar System.  Similarly the field of Astrology calls for sensitivity and acceptance from people to be recognized as a valid science.
